  • The Rogue River Gorge near Union Creek, Oregon in the Cascade Mountians is just miles from Crater Lake National Park.  The Rogue River goes through a series of elevation changes forming many waterfalls as it is forced through a narrow basalt canyon formed by the areas volcanic past.  The gorge was formed by the erosive action of the river. A small cave that is on the west wall of the gorge is the end of a lava tube.

  • Ornamental cherry trees flower but do not produce cherries.  in the early spring, the buds on the tree bloom and fill nearly the entire tree with flower blossoms that range in color from white to pink depending on the cultivar. The blooms appear before the foliage. Once the blooming season is finished, the leaves will appear.

  • McKee Covered Bridge, built in 1917, in southern Oregon crosses over the Applegate River.  The fall color of the trees leaves can be seen in the trees.  The Applegate River is a 51-mile (82 km) long tributary of the Rogue River. It drains forested foothills of the Siskiyou Mountains along the Oregon-California border.

As the rock was exposed, weathering and exfoliation of shell-like outer layers of the rock shaped the dome portion of the rock to its current shape. The summit is attainable as a day hike in the summer, if you have the stamina to undertake a 17-mile roundtrip hike with 5000 feet of elevation gain from the valley floor...This is an infrared image which captures light that we cannot see and turns it into a visible image. Plants like flowers and grass reflect more infrared light and appear brighter in infrared images while the sky reflects less making it darker.

  • As the last portion of the sun remains visible during a Total Solar Eclipse, the eclipse looks like a diamond ring.  The solar flares on the sun just become visible at this point.  Captured on August 21, 2017 in Salem, Oregon.

  • Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon on the crest of the Cascade Mountain range. It lies inside a caldera, or volcanic basin, created when the 12,000 foot (3,660 meter) high Mount Mazama collapsed during a violent eruption...Crater Lake has a depth of 1,943 feet (592 meters) and is the seventh deepest lake in the world and the deepest in the United States. Crater Lake receives on average 533 inches of snow each year which supplies the lake with with water. There are no inlets or outlets to the lake. Evaporation and seepage prevent the lake from becoming any deeper.

  • Azaleas are flowering shrubs making up part of the Rhododendron genus. Many Rhododendrons grow their flowers in rows or strips, however, most azaleas have terminal blooms with just one flower per flower stem. Azalea plants have so many stems that they are full of colorful flowers. Azaleas are recognised by these flowers blooming simulatneously in a showy display that remains for a month or two each spring.

  • Bearded irises have a fuzzy area on the lower petal of the flower.  Here two bearded yellow irises dispay their vibrant color.  Iris is a genus of flowering plant with attractive flowers containing between 200-300 species. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species.

  • The Encore is a part of the Wynn Las Vegas Resort and Country Club which is a luxury casino resort located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The 2,034 room hotel had a project cost $2.3 billion. The resort covers 215 acres (87 ha)...The resort features a 74,000 square feet (6,900 m2) casino, 27,000 sq ft (2,500 m2) of retail space in "The Esplanade", a spa and salon, five restaurants, seven bars, as well a nightclub. The building is 631 feet (192 m) in height. The Wynn and Encore towers together have a total of 4,750 rooms.

  • The Rogue Valley in know as Pear Country with thousands of acres of pear orchards producing pears sold around the world.  The pear trees blossom in early spring and have to be protected from frost on cold nights by smudge pots.

Nevada and Vernal Falls are visible on the left and are accessible only by foot.  A mountain stream formed by snow melt forms Nevada Falls, 594 feet (181 m), which then flows down to form Vernal Falls, 240 feet (73 m).  The stream eventually flows into the Merced River...This is an infrared image which captures light that we cannot see and turns it into a visible image. Plants like flowers and grass reflect more infrared light and appear brighter in infrared images while the sky reflects less making it darker.

The lake is a popular desination for fishing and hiking...This is an infrared image which captures light that we cannot see and turns it into a visible image. The color picture is used to colorize the infrared image giving a foreign and new perspective.   • Lembert Dome overlooks the Tuolumne Meadows and River in Yosemite National Park. The treeless granite dome has a sheer west face that is, 300 feet high and becomes less steep on the other three sides.  It is a popular destination for hiking and rock climbing.

  • Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL was founded in 1860.   Wheaton's "Old Main." Blanchard was built in four sections beginning in 1853 and was completed in 1927. Named for Jonathan Blanchard, the College's founder and first president, and his son, Charles Blanchard, the second president, the building is the oldest and most recognized on campus..The building's castle-like architecture was patterned after buildings at Oxford University which Dr. Jonathan Blanchard admired. It is constructed of native Illinois limestone that was quarried in Batavia, Illinois.

  • Pilot Rock is near Ashland, Oregon and is visible from much of the Shasta Valley in northern California, and parts of Oregon's Rogue Valley. Pilot Rock provides  a look at the inside of a volcano. Over time, the exterior volcano eroded away, leaving behind the now cooled magma of the ancient volcano's central vent. Fossil sites in the vicinity of Pilot Rock contain leaf impressions and conifer cones that became embedded in volcanic ash beds.

  • Bellagio, a 30 story luxury hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip was built on the site of the demolished Dunes hotel and casino...One of its most notable features is an 8-acre (3.2 ha) lake between the building and the Strip, which houses the Fountains of Bellagio, a large dancing water fountain synchronized to music. The fountain consists of 1,200 nozzles and 4,500 lights.  Some of the nozzles can shoot water 460 feet.

  • Each year the Cascade Mountains receive a lot of snow.  Crater Lake which is not too far away averages 533 inches (44 feet) of snow a year. Fresh snow fills the trees weighing the branches down.

  • Corals are marine organisms from the class Anthozoa and exist as small sea anemone-like polyps, typically in colonies of many identical individuals. Some corals are reef builders that are found in tropical oceans, which secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard skeleton...Corals can catch small fish and animals such as plankton using stinging cells on their tentacles, however these animals obtain most of their nutrients from photosynthetic unicellular algae.  As a results, most corals depend on sunlight and grow in clear and shallow water, at depths shallower than 200 ft (60 meters).

It has been damaged or destroyed four times; in 1912, 1939, 1983 and most recently on January 17, 1988 destroying the End Cafe for the second time in the decade. The first three piers were constructed from wood, the fourth and current pier is constructed from concrete and designed to withstand 31-foot (9.4 m) waves or a 7.0 magnitude earthquake.  At the end of the Pier is Ruby's Diner which is a 1940's style diner serving hamburgers, shakes, and other classic American food.

It is a popular destination in Southern California for hiking and horseback riding. The offshore waters are designated as an underwater park. Crystal Cove is used by mountain bikers inland and scuba and skin divers underwater. The beach contains tidepools and sandy coves which can be explored by visitors.

  • Mono Lake is a large saline and akaline lake in California on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is 1,944 m (6,380 ft) above sea level. The lake is in an geologically active area at the north end of the Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain.  Geological activity is caused by faulting at the base of the Sierra Nevada, and is associated with the crustal stretching of the Basin and Range Province. The most recent eruption occurred 350 years ago at Paoha Island in Mono Lake.

  • Sea Nettle Jellyfish, Chrysaora fuscescens, taken at the Monterey Aquarium in California. Not a jellyfish sting, but the sea nettle does. It hunts tiny drifting animals by trailing those long tentacles and frilly mouth-arms, all covered with stinging cells. When the tentacles touch prey, the stinging cells paralyze it and stick tight. The prey is then moved to the mouth-arms and finally to the mouth, where it's digested.

  • Mount Shasta in Northern California  at 14,179 feet (4,322 m) is the second highest peak in the Cascades and the fifth highest in California. Mount Shasta has an estimated volume of 85 cubic miles (350 km3) which makes it the most voluminous stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc.  Theodore Roosevelt said of the mountain,  "When I first caught sight of it over the braided folds of the Sacramento Valley, I was fifty miles away and afoot, alone and weary. Yet all my blood turned to wine, and I have not been weary since."

The first drop is 35 feet followed by a second of 50 feet which plunges into a wide pool below. The trail to the falls leads you around basalt rocks and through lush vegetation nourished by the stream.

It is approximately 111 miles (179 km) long. A maintained trail runs for 77-miles along the river through the beautiful forests and over small streams.  The river drains an expansive network of valleys in the mountains west of the Cascade Range and south of the Willamette Valley, from which it is separated by the Calapooya Mountains.
