  • Pilot Rock is near Ashland, Oregon and is visible from much of the Shasta Valley in northern California, and parts of Oregon's Rogue Valley. Pilot Rock provides a look at the inside of a volcano. Over time, the exterior volcano eroded away, leaving behind the now cooled magma of the ancient volcano's central vent. Fossil sites in the vicinity of Pilot Rock contain leaf impressions and conifer cones that became embedded in volcanic ash beds.

  • The Clark's Nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana), is a large passerine bird, in the family Corvidae. It is ashy-grey all over except for the black-and-white wings and central tail feathers. All Clark's Nutcrackers have a sublingual pouch capable of holding around 90 seeds; the pouch greatly enhances the birds' ability to transport and store seeds...Surplus pine seed is stored, usually in the ground for later consumption, in as many as 2500 caches of 5-10 seeds each spread over an area of up to 20 × 20 kilometers (12.5 × 12.5 mi). The birds regularly store more than their actual needs as an insurance against seed theft by other animals. Closely tied in with this storage behaviour is the bird's remarkable long-term spatial memory as they are able to relocate caches of seeds with remarkable accuracy, even six months later, and even when the cache sites are buried under 3 feet of snow.

  • Crown Fountain was designed by Spanish, Catalan artist Jaume Plensa and opened in July 2004. The fountain consists of two 50-foot glass block towers at each end of a black granite shallow reflecting pool. The towers project video images from a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens having water periodically flow through a water outlet in the screen to give the illusion of water spouting from their mouths. This is a reference to the traditional use of gargoyles in fountains, where faces of mythological beings were sculpted with open mouths to allow water, a symbol of life, to flow out. The collection of faces, Plensa's tribute to Chicagoans, was taken from a cross-section of 1,000 residents...The fountain, which is at the southwest corner of Millennium Park at Michigan Avenue and Monroe Streets, is a favorite of both children and families. Its use of water is unique among Chicago's many fountains, in that it promotes physical interaction between the public and the water. Both the fountain and Millennium Park are highly accessible because of their universal design. The fountain is a public play area and offers people an escape from summer heat and allows children to frolic in the fountain's water.

  • Funds for the construction of the Carnegie Library building were provided by a grant of $10,000 from steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie, who funded the establishment of some 3,000 libraries worldwide. The Museum building was designed by W.H. Weeks, an architect from Watsonville , California , and was built by the construction firm of Stephens and Maino of San Luis Obispo. The structure's sandstone was brought from Los Berros, near Arroyo Grande. The granite in the building was quarried from nearby Bishop's Peak and brought into the city on a spur of the narrow gauge Pacific Coast Railway. The Museum is the only building in San Luis Obispo County built with both of these local stones...When a search for a permanent home for the Museum was undertaken in 1953, the newly formed San Luis Obispo County Historical Society received assistance from the San Luis Obispo City Council and the County Board of Supervisors. An agreement was struck regarding the old library building, and in 1956, the San Luis Obispo County Historical Museum was opened to the public. .Information from: https://slochsorg.secure.myhosting.net..This is an infrared image which captures light that we cannot see and turns it into a visible image. • Yosemite National Park's most well-know feature is Half Dome, which stands at an altitude of 8,836 feet and 4,737 feet above the valley floor. As the rock was exposed, weathering and exfoliation of shell-like outer layers of the rock shaped the dome portion of the rock to its current shape. The summit is attainable as a day hike in the summer, if you have the stamina to undertake a 17-mile roundtrip hike with 5000 feet of elevation gain from the valley floor...This is a digital combination of an infrared image and a visible color image. • Living sand dollar have a different look than the white exoskeleton people are familiar with. Densely packed, tiny, dark purple spines cover live sand dollars and hide the star design...In their sandy seafloor habitat, sand dollars use their fuzzy spines, aided by tiny hairs (cilia), to ferry food particles along their bodies to a central mouth on their bottom side. They capture plankton with spines and pincers (pedicellariae) on their body surfaces. Sand dollars use their spines to move along the sand, or to drive edgewise into the sand. On the upper half of the sand dollar's body, spines also serve as gills...In quiet waters, sand dollars stand on end, partially buried in the sand. When waters are rough, sand dollars hold their ground by lying flat or even burrowing under the sand. Adults can also fight the currents by growing heavier skeletons. Young sand dollars weigh themselves down by swallowing heavy sand grains.

  • Toketee Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Oregon. It is recognized for its graceful columnar basalt formation that frame the two tiers of the falls. The waterfall is 113 feet high with a 28 foot upper fall and and a 85 foot lower fall that plunges into a wide pool. The North Umpqua River carved a gorge out of the lava flow which resulted in this marvelous waterfall. Above the waterfall is a dam from which most water is diverted to a powerhouse down stream through a wooden 12 foot diameter pipeline. The pipeline is visible from the trailhead parking lot. As a result of the dam and the diversion of the North Umpqua River, the river has been artifically tamed allowing the river to flow in an extremely consistent manor all year long.

It hunts tiny drifting animals by trailing those long tentacles and frilly mouth-arms, all covered with stinging cells. When the tentacles touch prey, the stinging cells paralyze it and stick tight. The prey is then moved to the mouth-arms and finally to the mouth, where it's digested.
