  • Yosemite National Park's most well-know feature is Half Dome, which stands at an altitude of 8,836 feet and 4,737 feet above the valley floor. As the rock was exposed, weathering and exfoliation of shell-like outer layers of the rock shaped the dome portion of the rock to its current shape. The summit is attainable as a day hike in the summer, if you have the stamina to undertake a 17-mile roundtrip hike with 5000 feet of elevation gain from the valley floor...This is an infrared image which captures light that we cannot see and turns it into a visible image. Plants like flowers and grass reflect more infrared light and appear brighter in infrared images while the sky reflects less making it darker.
