  • Yosemite Valley is known around the world for its beauty. Half Dome on the right stands at an altitude of 8,836 feet and 4,737 feet above the valley floor. As the rock was exposed, weathering and exfoliation of shell-like outer layers of the rock shaped the dome portion of the rock to its current shape. The summit is attainable as a day hike in the summer, if you have the stamina to undertake a 17-mile roundtrip hike with 5000 feet of elevation gain from the valley floor. The valley Is located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains and stretches for 7 miles (11 km). More than half a dozen creeks create waterfalls into the valley falling from 3000-4000 feet (900-1200 m) above the valley floor, which is 4000 ft (1200 m) above sea level. The streams combine into the Merced River, which flows into the San Joaquin Valley. The valley floor holds both forest and large open meadows. ..This is a digital combination of an infrared image and a visible color image. The color picture is used to colorize the infrared image giving a foreign and new perspective. Plants and trees reflect more infrared light and appear brighter in images while the sky reflects less making it darker.
