Mono Lake

Mono Lake is a large saline and akaline lake in California on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is 1,944 m (6,380 ft) above sea level. The lake is in an geologically active area at the north end of the Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain. Geological activity is caused by faulting at the base of the Sierra Nevada, and is associated with the crustal stretching of the Basin and Range Province. The most recent eruption occurred 350 years ago at Paoha Island in Mono Lake.
