Yosemite National Park's most well-know feature is Half Dome, which stands at an altitude of 8,836 feet and 4,737 feet above the valley floor. As the rock was exposed, weathering and exfoliation of shell-like outer layers of the rock shaped the dome portion of the rock to its current shape. The summit is attainable as a day hike in the summer, if you have the stamina to undertake a 17-mile roundtrip hike with 5000 feet of elevation gain from the valley floor. Nevada and Vernal Falls are visible on the left and are accessible only by foot. A mountain stream formed by snow melt forms Nevada Falls, 594 feet (181 m), which then flows down to form Vernal Falls, 240 feet (73 m). The stream eventually flows into the Merced River.
